Slumdog Millionaire
December 24, 2008
We don’t get to go to the movies much anymore so when we do we try to make it worthwhile. I’ve been disappointed at the last few movies I’ve seen in a theater like Burn after Reading. I just did not get that whole thing. Brad Pitt acting like a moron for 2 hours – I don’t understand.
When I heard about the movie Slumdog Millionaire, I had to admit it sounded some like gangster movie with Mark Wahlberg or perhaps Al Pacino. After reading about it I was pretty eager to go see it even though I hadn’t read the book. What a refreshing movie. I loved that it showed that side of India, which many Americans don’t know about – the corruption, the mafia like culture, exploitation of children, etc. Yes, still in 2008. The way the whole movie was tied into an episode of the Indian version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” was creative and unique.
What people may not know is that Anil Kapoor is a Bollywood star. Bollywood movies are fun to watch and all contain one or more of these elements: dancing, romance, betrayal, long lost love, and just basically a lot of melodrama. I was happy to see them in this film where they could show a different kind of their acting skill.
The music in the film was M.I.A., one of my favorite artists, which suited the theme perfectly.
It’s nice to see good Indian actors in a movie about Indian people in India. I’m still a little disappointed when I remember Ben Kingsley and Amy Irving with dark makeup on their faces. There are so many stories and truths that need to be heard from India and many talented people there that can do it.

I really liked that movie. Another favorite from the last year (or two) is Once.

Maya,
“Anil Kapoor” can be termed as a “Bollywood star,” but “Freida Pinto”? This is her first movie, prior to which she modeled and was a Presenter (TV).
Nevertheless its really amazing to see how non-Indian directors like Mr. Boyle, really capture the essence of the story in a way that’d be apt only for an insider.
This is a must read, since you’ve watched the film – http://www.livemint.com/2008/09/26234158/8216I-think-i-changed-worki.html?h=B
And for more on Anil Kapoor’s REAL gangsta connection – http://www.rediff.com/entertai/dec/27sat.htm (not recommended, though)

Excellent movie, just saw today and loved it. Not your typically movie about India, which is a breath of fresh air.

I saw Slumdog two weeks ago and I love that it managed to capture a number of the harsh realities of India while remaining inspirational and heartwarming. Hopefully now that it picked up some Golden Globes, more people will go out and watch it too.

Thanks Maya, adding Slumdog Millionaire near the top of our list.
Julia and I also really enjoy MIA. We saw them as an opening act for Gwen Stefani in Oakland. We enjoyed MIA as much as the main act.
Toni, Once sounds like one that J will really enjoy. We’ll check it out.
Here is one back for you guys. Give The Visitor (2007) by Thomas McCarthy a watch. It took a while to get into, but it really moved me.

Slumdog Millionaire was a great movie. It was an entertaining session with Indian actors speaking well versed and accented English, showing what India was, to the world. And to see that a British crew was behind it was equally amazing.
But i just dont know and dont agree, about the amount of awards heaped out on all the people. On my opinion, other than A.R.Rahman (who is my favorite) and the Sound guys, none of the other sides really needed an award (Oscar) to showcase.
My opinion.
